Datsyuk signs with Red Wings through 2014

The Detroit Red Wings announced Friday that they have signed star forward Pavel Datsyuk to a seven-year contract extension.

Sources have Datsyuk earning between $6 million and $7 million a season.

Datsyuk, 28, has 28 goals and leads the Wings with 59 assists and 87 points in 78 games this season.

''Pavel is one of the world's most skilled players and has developed into a bona fide superstar over the past two seasons,” said Wings GM Ken Holland. ''We think securing Pavel, who is moving into the prime of his career, is key to ensuring the long-term success of this franchise.”

''I am very pleased to announce that I am continuing my hockey career with the Detroit Red Wings by signing a seven-year contract,” said Datsyuk. ''This contract was extremely important to me, especially since I have been a Red Wing since 2001.”

Datsyuk was originally Detroit's sixth-round pick, 171st overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
