USA Hockey to honor Chelios on Monday

USA Hockey, in cooperation with the National Hockey League and the Detroit Red Wings, will honor four-time Olympian Chris Chelios prior to the opening faceoff of Monday’s NHL contest between the Red Wings and Anaheim Ducks at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Chelios became the NHL’s all-time games played leader among American-born players back on Nov. 24 when he competed in his 1496th career game to surpass Phil Housley.

Ron DeGregorio, president of USA Hockey, will make the special presentation to Chelios in honor of his record-breaking accomplishment.

“We’re pleased to honor Chris, undoubtedly one of the greatest American players of all time,” said DeGregorio. “He’s competed at the highest level for an extraordinary number of years and continues to be an extremely effective player.”

Through games of March 22, Chelios, who is in his 23rd NHL season, had played in 1540 career regular-season games with 936 points on 182 goals and 754 assists.
